about

"Again the pigeons go round the square. What triggers off this unified movement? It doesn't seem linked to any exterior stimulus ( explosion, detonation, change in light, rain, etc.) nor to any particular motivation; it seems completely gratuitous: the birds suddenly take flight, go round the square and return to settle on the district council building's gutter. "

-- Georges Perec, "An Attempt At Exhausting A Place In Paris"

Once, my roommate was conducting an interview over video from her room. The sound of her subject speaking over the speakers of her laptop traveled down our long, narrow hallway and sounded to me like there was a bird singing inside the apartment. I was confused and disoriented and delighted. I recorded the sound on my phone.

'Exhausting A Room' is a set of compositions and improvisations based around field recordings taken around my apartment. I was inspired by Georges Perec's attempt to document all the 'infra-ordinary' happenings he witnessed from a cafe on Saint-Sulpice. I wanted to trick myself into being surprised by things I might hear in my apartment, and to register my reaction.
