Miguel Gallego, a resident of New York, spends a considerable amount of time in transit. Be it by foot, bus, train or car, travel is an invariable aspect of their routine. Over time these commutes, as if concussed, often blur into grey, nondescript moments between moments.
In the wake of Adoration Room (2018) and A Flower You Would Like To Eat (2017), Gallego’s Miserable chillers project delivers Schoënblintsjia. The album, a radical departure from the outfit’s traditional mode of sophisticated pop songwriting, meditates on commute-induced stupefaction through a process-driven approach. Schoënblintsjia steadily envelopes listeners in a hazy collage of sound and experimentation. Its speculative mood evolves as each piece effortlessly rolls into the next, filled with multi-dimensional, meandering phrases and heady, sometimes heavy, improvisations.
