about

Soundtrack to the cult classic JRPG, Sullivan Quest (1996, SNES, PSX, Sega Saturn, Turbo Grafx-16, NeoGeo, 3DO, Atari Jaguar), newly remastered.

The game follows the journey of Sullivan the Frog and his friends who travel the World of Ebaum searching for the Amber Shards to restore life to the planet. Featuring a colorful cast of characters, turn-based combat, and an epic story chock full of plot twists, it was extremely similar to countless other more polished and competently programmed games that had been released at the time, and years prior.

Sullivan Quest was a commercial failure on release, the game was panned at the time for having “the weakest ever” protagonist, who “was stupid and sucked. No child would pretend to be Sullivan while playing with his friends in the basement at a slumber party,” noted critic Steve Schirripa writing for Edge Magazine in a scathing review. “If a child does pretend to be Sullivan, it would be so the child could be defeated handily by children pretending to be other, more popular characters like Goku or Sonic the Hedgehog.”

“The frog lacks a super mode,” lamented Dorek Kowalczyk, writing for Polish gaming magazine Świat Gier Komputerowych on the game’s European release in September 2001. In recent years, however, the game has been reassessed by Teaching Assistants at the NYU Tisch Game Center that “the very quality of having a loser protagonist” was ahead of its time, and relatable to people who play and make video games.

The continued resurgence in popularity for the game is credited to the ironic hipster content creators “Podcast About List,” who did a Let’s Play series of Sullivan Quest on popular streaming platform Twitch. The series had a total of 10,000,000 concurrent viewers at its height – with Drake, AOC, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan popping in during the final stream.

“I actually introduced the game to them,” says Podcast About List Dungeons & Dragon master, Patches. “I showed them the game and told them it would be funny to play it but they didn’t let me play it with them.”

The Company that developed Sullivan Quest is looking to rerelease the game for modern audiences, but have been very busy lately writing a radioplay called Sullivan Quest. In the meantime, the original soundtrack has been lovingly remastered by struggling musician Miguel Gallego for digital release on Bandcamp. “I think many current video games aspire to the same level of uninventiveness and nostalgia-baiting as Sullivan Quest and its thoroughly mediocre soundtrack. It’s been an honor to work on this project,” says Miguel.

This is the first in a multi volume project.
